Doriean Guitars
The luthier

A sound engineer who went back to wood.

Andrew Doriean works from his own workshop in the Northern Rivers of New South Wales. He came to lutherie the long way around: early years spent as a sound engineer, a family connection to woodworking, and a love of playing that never let up. The three met in the one bench.

His primary focus is the modern classical guitar. The instruments show a clear respect for traditional methods and the great makers, and eighteen years of building on that foundation has produced his own style and his own interpretation of what the guitar can be, with the modern advantages folded in rather than resisted.

The build

Traditional method. Contemporary voice.

Every instrument is built by one person, start to finish. There is no production line to move things along and no second pair of hands to blame, which is exactly why each one comes out the way it does.

01

Timber first

Selected for stiffness, weight and grain long before it is cut. The soundboard sets the ceiling for everything that follows, so nothing marginal gets used.

02

Built by hand

Traditional construction, worked to the piece of wood in front of him rather than to a fixed set of numbers. Bracing, thickness and voicing adjusted as it goes.

03

Voiced to respond

Tuned for projection, separation and the responsiveness a player actually feels under the fingers. A modern classical guitar that carries in a room.

Where to play one

Come and hear it before you decide.

A classical guitar is a personal thing and no description does the job. Instruments can be played at the workshop by arrangement, and are also carried in the Southern Highlands.
